The Wilderness Vigil is an ancient rite of passage practiced throughout most of human history in most cultures. As Choctow episcopal priest, Steven Charleston*, emphasizes, a vision quest is not a self-focused excursion to "find yourself." Rather, he says, it is a call from Earth for humans to be initiated into proper relationship so that they can lead their people with love and mature compassion. It is a ritual, a ceremony, a sacrifice of comforts to restore relationship with Earth as sacred.
